Why are virtually all Russian military aircraft cockpits pre-1990 green-aqua in color?

The picture is known technically as Zinc-Chromate. It was used on the interiors (not just the cockpits) of virtually all military aircraft until the 1980's. It was acclimatized to prevent corrosion on the aluminum. In the late 1980's they discovered that the powder given off by the paint was a potential cancer chance and was banned outright in the USA and many other countries.
The Russians eventually caught on and removed it from their aircraft too.
