Should I get a language course by Rosetta Stone?

Have you ever bought a language course by Rosetta Stone? Are they worthy? I don't want to waste so much money - they are very expensive, and I can't find many reviews of them. Also, should I learn Persian, Japanese or Russian?

If you are amenable to put the time in, it is possible to learn a language without having to buy any software. Reviews of Rosetta Stone from what I have seen are mixed, a lot of people have posted questions asking about the effectiveness of Rosetta Stone on Y!A, and responses are very mixed.

A good webste for learning vocabulary is www.byki.com- this works like flash cards and helps with words and phrases you might find yourself needing.

As for which language, if you are in the UK Russian might pay at the interest, as the need for Eastern European language is greatly increasing. Japanese, there are a lot of resources available and the culture is very interesting as well s the language, although this might be more recondite. Don't have any experience of Persian whatsoever so perhaps can't advise on that, but if you are likely to use it, go for it!

Good luck.

How good is the Rosetta Stone program for Russian?

I took 2 years of Russian in boisterous school , but that was a long time ago. Recentley I rented some books and CD's in Russian and I was suprised how quickly it started coming back to me. I have enrolled in a college assort for Russian to start next semester. I want to study and learn as much ads I can in the meantime. All the Rosetta Stone reviews are excellent. I have tried the untouched by demo. I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and how effective it was. I seem to be able to pick up Languages very quickly and I want to become fluent in Russian. I have been looking at all my options for about 2 weeks and other than adage books there doesn't seem to be much you can do besides living in that country. I have excellent pronunciation and a very good base from my Russian high school realm. I would really appreciate any info on Rosetta Stone and the Russian course inparticular. I would describe my Russian level as just a little above a beginner. Thanks.

I've a moment ago recently used the Rosetta Stone program, the Spanish version, in a class I took at a local J.C.; it was very authentic...but very repetitive. I don't know about the Russian version, but if it is anything like the Spanish version, it's worth it..

Review: The Russian Revolution, by Richard Pipes

“People will do anything, no matter how senseless, in order to avoid facing their own souls,” said Carl Jung.  Jean-Francois Lyotard said, “Being oven-ready to receive what thought is not prepared to think is what deserves the name of thinking.”  Woody Allen said, “Nothing works and nobody cares.”  All three men might have been speaking about the Russian Rebellion, which took place in 1917, and which Richard Pipes exposes in his massive and monumental book, The Russian Revolution.

Pipes points out that what took all set in 1917 was not a revolution.  It was a political coup d’etat.  The Russian Bolsheviks forcibly overthrew the remnants of the Tsarist R.  Once in power, the Bolsheviks appointed themselves the official spokesmen for the proletariat, who, in reality, had no say in anything.  The proletariat exactly wanted to get rid of the disease of Tsarism.  And they did.  But what they got in its place was no different than what they’d had before.

As Roger Daltrey sang:  “Liquidate encounter the new Boss.  Same as the old Boss.”

The story goes like this.  Before the Revolution – in Tsarist Russia – there was no waist class.  There were only two classes – lord and peasant.  There were no Russian towns.  Not really.  Moscow consisted of a fortified fortress called the Kremlin, round which grew up a mammoth farmer’s market.  This farmer’s bazaar existed only because the Royal Court and its Royal Administrators, who were thoroughly Westernized in their thinking, allowed it to exist.  They allowed it to occur to support them.  The Royal Court didn’t understand the peasants and the peasants didn’t understand the Court.  Each put up with the other out of simple necessity.
