Should the US side with Georgia or the Rising Former Soviet Republic (Russia)?

All things the current conflict that has ignited a possible war between the former Soviet country "Georgia", and its "Russian" foe, where does the US and EU remain in effect in all of this?
The Of one mind States has already shown it's intention to side with Georgia. Based on comments being bandied about so to does a large section of the world including the EU. At the end of the day though what I think everyone stands for is diffusing this situation before almost 2 decades worth of fostering new relationships since the end of the Cold War are damaged beyond mend.

And what was with the coat mind cutter? the coast guard is for defense of American homeland waters and drug patrols and above all search & save not NOT A FRICKEN COMBAT ZONE!!

Look back at the Bush and Putin antics.
Every G8 session Putin would get Bush drunk. They would go play and do silly things. Remember Putin letting Bush effort his antique Ziv in Moscow.
All this time Bush thought they were drinking Buddies; but KGB Putin was learning Bush's tipping objective. Putin knows how far he can push Bush. And Bush is completely screwed.
Once again the wonders of having an idiot president surfaces.
