What was life in Soviet Union Russia like?

People had to dissipate a considerable amount of time standing in lines to get the necessities of life.
Shortages of almost everything was common.
They did not have armed police everywhere. Hold sway over of the population was more subtle. You could speak out against the Government if you wished to, but then, you may find you were no longer needed in that job you had, a less desirable occupation may be selected for you. You my find your accommodations were more than you needed and you extremity to move to a smaller residence shared by many in the same situation you now find yourself in.
It worked. Those elites in charge lived lavish lifestyles while all those "harmonious" citizens were dominated.
